Who is a Candidate for Breast Revision?

Candidates for breast revision surgery typically include individuals who have undergone previous breast augmentation procedures and are now facing concerns such as:

  • Implant complications
  • Changes in aesthetic preferences
  • The desire to address breast asymmetry

They may have experienced issues such as:

  • Implant rupture
  • Capsular contracture
  • Changes in breast shape over time

Breast revision surgery is an option for those seeking to correct and enhance their breast appearance. During a consultation with Dr. Chasan, he will go over all of your specific concerns and goals before coming up with a personalized plan. This ensures that every patient’s unique needs are met.

Why Might I Need Breast Augmentation Revision?

Capsular contracture

As possibly the most common complication, capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue surrounding the implant tightens and hardens. This creates a visible deformity, as well as physical discomfort for the patient.

Implant malposition

When the implant slips from its proper position, it presents an aesthetic issue. An example of implant malposition is the so-called “double bubble” deformity, in which the implant drops below its intended pocket. This creates a double bubble appearance.

In some cases, particularly when patients have thin skin, the skin is unevenly distributed along the surface of the implant, resulting in visible rippling. This rippling is typically visible along the sides of the breast.

Implant rupture

As manmade products that do have an eventual expiration, implants can fail. With saline implants, this rupture is evident almost immediately. With silicone implants, it is detectable eventually, but generally poses no health risk. Patients with silicone implants should undergo annual mammograms to verify the status of their implants.

Incorrect implant size

This may be the result of a poor decision, or it may be the result of physical discomfort. In some cases, women may have placed implants that are too large, resulting in aesthetic and comfort-related issues. In other cases, women may simply be dissatisfied with their original size and wish for larger breasts.

Ranch & Coast surgeons have extensive experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive breast procedures, enabling them to correct a previous breast surgery with a subpar result. All told, the doctors at our facility can help patients correct virtually any complication following primary breast surgery.

The Good News

These are the most common and treatable conditions for revision breast surgery in San Diego. The vast majority of these are fixable and will leave little trace of a previously poor procedure. Many techniques are used in combination to fix breast augmentation, such as capsulorrhaphy, capsulotomy, capsulectomy, repositioning of implant sub-muscularly, use of ADM’s (Acellular Dermal Matrix), and mastopexy. In addition, shape and size discrepancies and areolar asymmetries can be addressed.

What is the Recovery Process like After Breast Revision?

Patients generally return to work after one to two weeks following breast implant revision surgery but should avoid vigorous activities for three weeks. Visible bruising should subside within two weeks and swelling within three.

5 Tips for Your Breast Revision Recovery

Here are Dr. Chasan’s top five tips for your breast revision recovery:

  • While resting, keep your head and shoulders elevated on at least two pillows for the first 24 hours
  • A light diet of liquids, soup, or JELL-O is best for the rest of the day after surgery before progressing to your regular diet the next day
  • As all incisions will be extremely sensitive to sunlight for one year, use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more for the first six months and at least SPF 15 for the next six months
  • Stay hydrated and eat a nutritious diet to optimize your healing process
  • To reduce swelling, keep a steady rotation of ice packs available for three to five days following surgery
