As possibly the most common complication, capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue surrounding the implant tightens and hardens. This creates a visible deformity, as well as physical discomfort for the patient.
When the implant slips from its proper position, it presents an aesthetic issue. An example of implant malposition is the so-called “double bubble” deformity, in which the implant drops below its intended pocket. This creates a double bubble appearance.
In some cases, particularly when patients have thin skin, the skin is unevenly distributed along the surface of the implant, resulting in visible rippling. This rippling is typically visible along the sides of the breast.
As manmade products that do have an eventual expiration, implants can fail. With saline implants, this rupture is evident almost immediately. With silicone implants, it is detectable eventually, but generally poses no health risk. Patients with silicone implants should undergo annual mammograms to verify the status of their implants.

In addition, shape and size discrepancies and areolar asymmetries can be addressed.
Patients generally return to work after one to two weeks following breast implant revision surgery but should avoid vigorous activities for three weeks. Visible bruising should subside within two weeks and swelling within three.
