Our board-certified plastic surgeons offers calf augmentations in San Diego for patients who are unable to improve the definition of their lower legs through exercise. As some of the most experienced plastic surgeons in the San Diego area, our team uses advanced surgical techniques to create calves that look more prominent yet completely natural. In the paragraphs below, learn more about calf augmentation surgery and the remarkable results it can achieve.

Calf Augmentation Treatment & Technique

Calf augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the calves, improving physique and self-esteem.

Calf augmentation utilizes calf implants to bring more definition to the calves for those who cannot build their calf muscles—or those who have deformities due to injuries or disease.

It is one of the fastest growing cosmetic surgeries, particularly among men because it creates more symmetrical legs that look completely natural. Our surgeons explain what a calf augmentation entails and how you might be a good candidate for calf implants. They'll specifically discuss the process and benefits of calf augmentation.

What is a Calf Augmentation?

Calf augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses solid silicone inserts to create larger, natural looking calves. In most cases, calf augmentation is used for cosmetic reasons, but a 2016 Medscape article reports, “in people with a shrunken lower leg, as a result of injury or disease, an implant can be inserted in the calf to help minimize the resultant deformity.”

No matter how much we weight train and exercise, several factors such as our genetics can limit the amount of muscle we are able to build. Even intense bodybuilding cannot guarantee we will have the muscle definition and physique we desire. As a result, calf implants are becoming one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, especially for men.

According to a 2017 report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “calf augmentation rose 54% between 2016 and 2017.” This number will likely rise further as more men become comfortable with undergoing cosmetic procedures.

The Benefits of Calf Augmentation

Patients who get calf augmentation experience several physical and psychological benefits. Deformities and injuries that cause misshapen or sunken calves can be very depressing for people. They are often self-conscious and avoid showing their legs. Calf implants can give them the confidence they need to feel good about exposing their legs in public.

Some people want more balanced legs while others want defined calves to match their muscle tone. Calf implants will give you the legs you want without looking too prominent or overdone.

What does a Calf Augmentation Involve?

Calf augmentation is a low-risk outpatient procedure that requires local or intravenous anesthesia—and sometimes an epidural—to ensure the patient is comfortable during the surgery. It takes our surgeons about an hour to complete the surgery, and most of their patients resume their normal routine approximately ten days after the procedure.

Our surgeons will make a small incision in the crease at the back of your knee where the scar will be less noticeable. They minimize the risks of severe scars by combining the best practices and their distinct techniques, so no one but you will know you’ve had work done.

Before and After Results for Calf Augmentation

Calf augmentation is one of our practice's favorite cosmetic procedures because few surgeries have such satisfying results with so few risks and such little downtime. The before and after results of calf augmentation, as you can see from Dr. Paul E. Chasan’s patients in his gallery, are noticeable but do not look unnatural.

Calf augmentations offer results that last a lifetime, but The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery suggests you return to your plastic surgeon’s office for follow-up evaluations at prescribed times and if any complications arise after the procedure.
