What to Consider if you are Planning on Cosmetic Injectable Lip Fillers

Lip fillers such as Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHAs are a type of soft tissue filler approved by the FDA that are used for lip enhancement.

Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHAs add several aesthetic qualities to the face and provides solutions to a patient’s cosmetic concerns. While these minimally invasive cosmetic injections are mostly safe, patients should consult a reputable plastic surgeon to determine if lip injections are right for them.

In this article, Dr. Paul E. Chasan, a board-certified plastic surgeon in San Diego, discusses the lip fillers Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHA including what you should consider before getting lip injections, the cost, and before and after results of lip fillers.

What are Lip Fillers?

Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHA are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) dermal fillers that increase volume in the lips resulting in a plumper, smoother mouth. According to a 2018 guide from The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, “Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in the skin.” Lip fillers are a minimally invasive procedure that poses few risks to the patient.

Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHA are FDA-approved for lip injections which smooth moderate to several lines in the lips as well as replenish volume to the lips. Lip fillers can “last between four to six months but injections in the lips usually wear out faster than those in the face,” states a 2018 guide from The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

Juvéderm Vollure XC® is a dermal filler that is FDA-approved to be injected in the lips. One of the main benefits of Juvéderm Vollure XC is that it can last longer. It smooths and plumps lips that are thin or wrinkled.

The RHA® Collection uses a gentle manufacturing process to help preserve the natural structure of hyaluronic acid—allowing it to more closely resemble the HA in your skin—for clean beauty. It is designed to be resilient enough to adapt to your dynamic facial movements for a look that’s beautiful at rest and flawless in motion.

Lip augmentation is one of the most beautifying procedures that plastic surgeons perform.  Unfortunately, most of the lip fillers available are temporary.  In the right candidate who has had previous lip filler and would like a more permanent result, silicone oil remains the best option.  Dr. Chasan has over 20 years’ experience in injecting Silicone oil.  In fact, Dr. Chasan wrote a special article for the Journal of plastic and reconstructive surgery regarding soft tissue augmentation with silicone oil.

Risk and Side Effects

Like most minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHAs offer patients minor pain, little to no downtime, and few risks. The most common side effects of all dermal fillers are temporary bruising, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, cosmetic injections can be accidentally injected into the surrounding tissue which can have permanent effects. However, Dr. Paul E. Chasan is familiar with these risks and how to avoid them as any qualified plastic surgeon should be.

Lip Fillers on Thin Lips

Genetics and age play a key role in the shape and size of your lips but with minimally invasive lip fillers like Juvéderm Vollure XC and RHAs, those with thin or wrinkled lips can achieve a more aesthetic and balanced mouth.

Lip fillers offer patients several cosmetic and practical benefits. A 2018 article published by WebMD states, “lip injections allow patients and plastic surgeons to control lip volume, patients can receive several treatments until the desired volume is achieved, and bumps dissolve easily.”

Cost or Price of Lip Fillers

The average cost of Hyaluronic Acid lip fillers according to a guide from The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is $651 per treatment. Patients may need more than one treatment to achieve their desired volume. Non-Hyaluronic Acid fillers tend to last longer than other lip injections, making them more cost-efficient than similar options.
